Saint Alphonsus
Founded in 1853

St. Alphonsus Church, Auburn, NY is a parish with 1000 registered families. Its roots were German Roman Catholic. The medium to average age of its parishioners is 42 years. When you meet the people of St. Alphonsus you feel a sense of warmth and a welcoming spirit that is felt throughout the faith community from the pastor and through each of the staff members.

St. Alphonsus Parish believes that social justice is a priority. The people of the parish work with Catholic Charities have a very active Cares and Shares Program and house a Food Pantry. This Food Pantry works not only with the St. Alphonsus faith community, but the local community as well. St. Alphonsus embraces diversity. Everyone is always welcome at St. Alphonsus.

There is a regional Catholic School (St. Joseph School), which is supported and housed at St. Alphonsus. It’s a school, which welcomes students from the other area Churches. There is a very strong faith formation program for youth and adults. There also is a 5PM Regional Liturgy, which meets the needs of the local community to celebrate each Sunday.

There is a weekly traditional Wednesday luncheon for Priests/Pastoral Leaders to gather for camaraderie. The Rectory is always open to all Priests/Pastoral Leaders. St. Alphonsus has previously housed retired priests and continues to house priests assigned to parishes.

There is an active Rosary Altar Society for all the women of the Parish, who raise money for Church Altar supplies. They have an Annual Garage Sale as well as gatherings throughout the year. There is a Legion of Mary Group who pray for the parish, and distribute communion to shut-ins. The Parish Life Committee is very active in getting the faith community together periodically for functions throughout the year, such as, pass a dish suppers, parish picnics, Irish fests, turkey raffles, etc. They also have gatherings in which other faith communities are invited to join.

Once the Narthex was enlarged, there is now open space for welcoming folks for funerals and weddings, as well as weekends. There also is a quiet room for children who may be unhappy. This room also doubles as a bride’s room prior to weddings. There is a room for celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the Narthex.

St. Alphonsus is sensitive to all people with disabilities. The Church is full accessible for those with wheel chairs, walkers, etc. Also, the microphones have been updated with a loop for the hearing impaired. (Folks with a hearing disability can contact the Rectory for a hearing assisting device.)

There is also tele-education (This is long distance learning via the cable from St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry, Rochester. These are all College Level Courses), CYO, school gym and faith community parish functions.

St. Alphonsus Church has a very large seating capacity with plenty of overflow seating in the Choir Loft. St. Alphonsus Parish is centrally located with plenty of parking space and easy access to the Church, Rectory, Food Pantry, Parish Center and School.
